This book is a comprehensive handbook for race driving on Kunos Simulazioni’s Assetto Corsa simulator. It is not a gaming guide. What you will find here are technical topics covering graphics card optimisations, force feedback customisation, simulator configuration, race car dynamics, race car components, car set-up, driving techniques, racing rules, race strategies, race tactics, psychology of race driving, and handling guides for each car type. I also present the cornering lines for all laser-scanned tracks. I describe each track, corner-by-corner and bump-by-bump, with cockpit view screenshots.

Going Nowhere Fast In Assetto Corsa 20180120 Race Driving On A Simulator eBook Amen Zwa

This is a fantastic resource for all aspects of Assetto Corsa. The first payoff for me was adjusting the software for better performance based on the book's recommendations. I was able to go from an almost unplayable 12fps to an acceptable 35fps. (I have an old computer - AC normally runs much better than this).

It is also especially useful for learning how to tune cars' setups for hotlaps (changing gear ratios, rev limiting, brake balance, suspension, tires, fuel levels, etc.). Once you've memorized a track, these changes can be very helpful for shaving off additional time. These sections are very in-depth, and even briefly covers tuning areas that AC doesn't (yet, at least) allow you to modify.

The book does a nice job with reviewing race car driving techniques (trail braking, how to take different types of turns, etc.), and car handling. I was pretty familiar with this aspect, so I skimmed these sections, but everything I read was similar or complimented what I read in real-life race car driving books ("Going Faster! Mastering the Art of Race Driving" by Carl Lopez, and "Ultimate Speed Secrets: The Complete Guide to High-Performance and Race Driving" by Ross Bentley).

After reading the rest of the book, the part I was most looking forward to, how to drive each track, I found I really didn't need as much as I thought I would. It's really just applying everything learned previously, though there were some good additional insights (like taking the last "chicane" at full speed at Mugello - for some reason, I never thought to do this, and taking this approach easily shaved a second off my best time). The brief track history info is interesting as well, as is the other bits of historical and background info throughout the book.

My biggest complaint about this section is that the text refers to the corner names, and doesn't have a track map reference with named corners. I brought this up to the author, and he said he would consider adding this to a future edition. I also brought up a few other things with the author, and he was very responsive and helpful, which I didn't expect.

Overall this is a great text specifically geared toward Assetto Corsa, which makes it pretty unique. Definitely worth a read if you are looking to get more out of the software.

Going Nowhere Fast In Assetto Corsa 20180120 Race Driving On A Simulator eBook Amen Zwa Reviews

Fantastic book. Not just about the game, but includes valuable info about PC gaming and optimising your video card, driving techniques, car setup etc. Highly recommended. Author is also very responsive. Great work.
An excellent book on simulator driving and race driving principles and setup. I hadn't thought of using these simulators to just enjoy driving since a lot of them are set up for racing, which I'm not so keen on. Amen has shown me how to focus initially on just one track and build my knowledge and enjoy learning it and improving. Little things like bette and better race lines can, over time, improve your times and your overall driving skills and understanding of what you are doing.
Without a doubt, this is the definitive work on Assetto Corsa (AC) set up, implementation, and progression through the simulator. Zwa artfully incorporates technical guidance and humor into an accessible and enjoyable read. Highly recommended for all who wish to optimize their AC experience and hone their driving skills. The author is committed to the keeping the book current and relevant and has provided several useful updates.
There is no manual for Asset Corsa or the force feedback wheels you need to use it. This book provides the basics to get you started. It then goes on o several chapters on how to drive, which may be even more important for enjoyment of the game.
This is a really comprehensive guide to sim racing. It covers more than just Assetto Corsa, and the content also speaks to driving in real life. The author is an engineer and the writing style mostly follows suit. So expect a lot of technical information rather than emotional connections. But every once in a while a little of his personality and humor sneak in.
Amen Zwa is a great and entertaining writer, first of all. If you are interested in going deeper into some of the aspects of Assetto Corsa, this book is a great tool to help you acquire a much deeper appreciation for many aspects within the driving simulator. For me, reading this book made me appreciate Assetto Corsa even more, but most importantly, it gave me a glimpse into aspects of car design and dynamics, motorsports history, physics and computer graphics that have been immensely helpful in my learning journey! I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in maximizing their time behind the simulator's wheel!
Assetto Corsa is a realistic and complex racing simulation that allows many cars to be tuned in great detail. Unless you are already a pro in race car setup and suspension mechanisms, you won't understand much about the brief in-game description. After reading this book, I'm able to better setup cars for specific tracks, to drive with better techniques, and to put down faster lap times. This is especially true for more advanced cars such as F1's and LMP1's, which you really need to understand their complex suspension designs and powertrains in order to take the full advantage.

The book is written in a friendly and informal tone and dotted with numerous fun automotive facts that go beyond Assetto Corsa, so it is a delight to read. Note that, however, the policy of only allows you to read the edition at the time of purchase despite frequent updates from the author.
