Marlene Parker met and fell in love with a would-be musician when she was 17 years old. At the age of 20, she becomes pregnant but a month before her due date she is left behind for a chance to become a Rock Star. Four years later, she has a wonderful little girl but it is hard being a single mother. She's got a boyfriend who wants to have her and her daughter move to Paris with him. Then her ex-boyfriend, Luke Anderson, returns the Rock Star. On his tour, he comes back to Seattle. He's on a mission to be the father his daughter needs and be the man Marlene needs. But actions speak louder than words.

This is a really good book with a great cast of characters that are developed. Things aren't always how they seem and past problems can haunt you. Definitely worth a read.
4.5 Stars

Marlene Parker and Luke Anderson were an item from the time she was seventeen till she got pregnant at twenty, him twenty-two, and he left her at nine months to go on the road and make it big.

So when she sees him in the hotel lobby (her place of employment) for the first time he incites in her both love and hate, and she does what any woman scorned and not wanting to face her ex would do...she hides in the bathroom.

But she can't hide from their past relationship for long. Now four years later, Luke has realized that life on the road is lonely, and he made the biggest mistake of his life walking away.

Told from Marlene's point of view, I was pulled in from the very beginning. You can feel M's heartache and her dilemma. She shares a past and a child with Luke, not to mention a still current attraction; but he walked out on her and their daughter and hasn't seen them since. She also has a new, stable boyfriend in her life that can offer what Luke hasn't.

On one hand, you want Marlene to tell him "too bad" when he wants back in her and their daughter's life after abandoning them. On the other hand, it doesn't take long to realize that Luke is rather sweet and endearing. I didn't know how Nicole Simone was going to pull it off, but she does. I thought Luke would have to be the world's biggest louse for walking out on his pregnant girlfriend, but instead Luke turns around to be one of those adorable rocker book boyfriends. "Daddy Luke" and "domestic, dinner cooking Luke" are really sweet and hot.

Both characters are very likable and down to earth. The story a wonderful job of illustrating Marlene's predicament between following her heart and risking getting broken again vs. choosing the safe and responsible guy who can fulfill her career dream and won't leave her but who she may never fall in love with. She also has to take into account her daughter and what's best for Nil. The story is just complicated enough that I think most readers could put themselves in Marlene's position and realize what a difficult choice it would be to make.

There are confrontations between Luke and Marlene, and I liked how she'd let him have it, but then they'd come back together. It wasn't a drawn out screaming match which showed how there were still strong feelings of love there. He also didn't make excuses for what he did, and he accepted his mistakes. I think that helps the reader overlook the magnitude of what Luke did a little bit.

I found the story very engaging and I honestly couldn't put it down, reading it all in one sitting. I occasionally craved a chapter or two from Luke to get his perspective and maybe a few more loves scenes since there is so much sexual tension brewing between them.

The inclusion of Marlene's family's perspectives, particularly the other females in her life, was a nice touch. Her grandmother's personal tales of love was cute as Marlene has to weigh out what's best for her while tackling an age old question of what qualities/elements make for the best marriage.

The rock star perspective in this book focuses on the pitfalls of success and being on the road while your family is left behind at home, and it's an often not written about plot point, but a valid one none the less. This is also a story of making amends and following your heart. The story has touches of humor and a bit of excitement towards the climax. Luke only has four days in town so there's the lingering question (and suspense) of what's going to happen/what is he going to do when it's time to go. However, the story wraps up nicely at the end and where things go from there was firmly implied. HEA. No cliffhanger. Stand-alone novel.
I really wanted to like this book, it had a fantastic plotline. However, it didn't feel real. The characters also didn't ring true to me. Marlene and Luke were high school sweethearts. Luke was a rocker boy with a band and her parents didn't like him. She still went to live with him and after three years, when she was pregnant 6 months, he left her to go fullfill his dreams as a rock star. She went on to have her baby, with the help and support of her best friend Camille, her mother and grandmother. Four years later, she's working in a hotel reception desk and Luke suddenly appears, he's on tour and stopping in Seattle for 4 days. He greets her like he's delighted to see her and she runs and hides in the bathroom. Turns out he wants to make amends and meet his daughter. Huh?!?

At this point, I would expect Marlene to put resistance, to let her daughter meet with Luke but under controlled conditions, be mistrustful and observant, etc. I also expected that Luke would work slowly to gain Nil's love and Marlene's trust. But he acted like Marlene was already his girl. She alternatively melts for him or yells at him for his abandonement. This goes on for most of the book and I got tired of it. Every time there was a discussion, this would come up. Another thing that didn't ring true is how much free time he appeared to have to be with Marlene and Nil (the baby), and how easily he could frequent coffee shops, museums and the like without a stampede of fans and/or papparazi hounding him. One day he was in a coffee shop woth Marlene and Nils and this one groupie appears and propositions Luke. Aren't they supposed to frequent the show venues at the end of shows and stalk the stars? Don't they go around in groups? And how come she knew he was there and there were no other fans?

Marlene's situations with her mother and grandmother had an odd sound, I didn't get a sense of deep feelings. And the worst of all was the totally incredible ending. Just doesn't ring true. Great story, but wrong execution.
"Our love story shouldn't have an end, only a beginning."

What a poetic, hot piece of work Luke was...too bad those lines he spews can never make up for leaving his pregnant girlfriend to go be a rock star.

But then again, Marlene ended up taking him back after a four year hiatus and a couple "I'm sorry's."

The story stared off perfectly, there was buildup, frustration and even tears. But with each person Marlene so quickly forgave, the excitement fizzled. First, she allows herself to be Luke's doormat, then eagerly accepts him back, her mother does nothing but criticize her, and then we find out that her bestfriend brokered a life-altering decision for herself behind her back.

What I think is that Marlene needs to surround herself around an entirely new crowd of people, and no, I don't mean her rebound boyfriend, Finn. That nonsense fit he threw towards the end of the book was completely out of character for him.

The book itself was great, hence my 4 star review, but sometimes Marlene's decisions to overlook peoples flaws were a bit too much for me. I just wanted to shake some sense into her. Like, "Get your head out of the cookie dough and open your eyes!"
