Deep in the Dark Ages, with Vikings to the north and Aghlabid pirates to the south, a small flicker of the Roman Empire has been nurtured as an island of high civilization. Defeated Longobards scheme to bring it down from within. If Byzantium falls 600 years too soon, nothing of western civilization will survive to spark the Renaissance. Enter Wade Linwood of the 21st Century. Suffering of crossed senses where scents can conjure objects and sights can call up tastes, he wants nothing but the ordinary life of an insurance underwriter. When a trip to the acupuncturist opens an unused portal in his synesthete's brain, a plea from the past draws him to a time when he must save the remaining shreds of history to preserve his own. (Now with maps and glossary).
"Many would be lucky to write a whole series marked by the wit and gift for
swashbuckling action and romance that Parris builds into his debut...A sharply intelligent and energetic historical fantasy." ~KIRKUS REVIEWS
Wade of Aquitaine Book One of an Epic Speculative Fiction Series eBook Ben Parris
A map in the front of a fantasy novel gets an immediate two-thumbs-up from me, because that shows the author thought way too much about the setting and the framework of the whole story. Imagine my surprise at opening the book to find the map was of real historical places. Wade of Aquitaine deftly mixes medieval history and modern sci-fi stuff, and conveniently, author Ben Parris provides a glossary of all the information that you'll need. That is so considerate. Your fingers should thank him for all the keying into Google that you won't have to do.I also have to give credit to his acknowledgments, including a "logic checker." Is Ben Parris the first author to employ such a person? Shouldn't every book have one of those? Clearly it must be a secret society of learned individuals, and Parris knows one.

Wade of Aquitaine Book One of an Epic Speculative Fiction Series eBook Ben Parris Reviews
We were given a copy of Wade of Aquitaine so that we could review it.
Wade of Aquitaine is not the type of book we normally read. This book is one that really makes one think and contemplate. It is one of those types of books that requires one to really think outside the box. If you have every contemplated the classic paradox of time, you will enjoy this book.
Wade of Aquitaine is very well written and extremely well thought out. Often when we read fiction, we find ourselves reading about something that we just can’t see happening. This book could have gone that way except Ben Parris, the author, explains the underlying premise as to why it could happen.
The book is one you don’t want to put down. It is a long read, but a very interesting one. It is very entertaining and appears to be well researched.
The Reviews by David and Suzanne scale rates books from zero to five, with zero being terrible and five being great. Wade of Aquitaine rates all five stars.
If you cannot grasp the concept of space/time, then this book is probably not for you. If, however, a space time continuum is your bag, you will love this book.
The premise is fascinating--a synesthete of crossed-senses traveling back in time to safeguard history. The author expertly weaves together historical fact and suspenseful fiction in a complex, gripping story. I'm looking forward to reading the second book in the series!
A novel that takes you from the twenty-first century back to the Dark Ages in the blink of an eye, Wade of Aquitaine is full of surprises, plot twists and interesting characters. This book is unlike any other and is well-worth reading.
Parris, clearly an avid history fan, grounds the tale of Wade and his delightfully detailed synesthesia by sending said protagonist to the dark and dangerous Middle Ages. Drawn there by a similarly afflicted someone, Wade must quickly adapt to a time where the draconian and the mundane are one and the same.
The book is both well-plotted and well-researched, but what most stood out to me was that it was well-written.
For a book that is both fantasy and history, Wade of Aquitaine doesn't suffer from the prose shortcomings typical of either. Parris's sentences aren't mere means to an end; rather, they flow and sparkle with that beautiful clarity more often found in the lit-fic aisle.
Keep it coming, Parris.
