During my mechanical engineering degree, I read a number of books about engineering projects and designs over the ages. This is still a hobby, so I purchased "Bleichert's Wire Ropeways" in the hope that I would learn something new. Having finished the book over the weekend, I can say that it is excellent.The book is about the invention of a German engineer called Adolf Bleichert. He designed a conveyance system that, as shown on the book's front cover, uses hanging wires. These would be necessary where the terrain was impassable for trains or other vehicles. I had been vaguely aware that this type of system was once used, but I was surprised by some of the projects that are described in the book. These include a system in Argentina that transported goods through a 900-foot tunnel, then 2,010 feet across a river and 1,725 feet over a ravine, all at steep inclines. This entire ropeway was dubbed, evidently with good cause, the "Eighth Wonder of the World".
Because Bleichert's company no longer exists and the wire ropeways have become obsolete, this book is one of few detailed sources on a fascinating achievement of late 19th century and early 20th century engineering. In addition, the author Peter von Bleichert descends from Adolf Bleichert; it looks to me as though some of the diagrams and period photographs in the book are from his family's collection.

If you're a fan of mechanical engineering, with a bit of history chucked in for good measure, than this is a great book for you to buy. For the rest of us, it's a quirky curiosity. It tells the story of the author's great great grandfather who designed and manufactured aerial ropeways and installed them all over the world, starting with his first one in Saxony, Germany for a paraffin manufacturer in 1872.
He proceeded to refine his designs and they were sold to such far-flung places as the South Pacific, Argentina, Tanzania, Chile and Norway. Indeed, his ropeways hold many records including highest, longest, northernmost and most southern in the world. Although he died in 1901,he had groomed his sons as potential successors with his widow to guide them. The company prospered under his sons Paul and Max until the start of the Great War when they were no longer able to export, however they were fully employed on installing systems for moving troops.
They did so well that the King of Saxon ennobled them, which is how the family name had a `Von' added to it! Alas, the company suffered in the great depression, going bankrupt in the nineteen thirties, but continued in different guises and the name lives on still.
It's a credit to his writing than Peter Von Bleichert manages to be so engaging on such a potentially technical and possibly even dry subject for most people. I only got this book as I've read all his other works and I have to say I found this one fascinating. The diagrams are detailed, and yet simple enough to comprehend and illustrate the subject matter marvellously.
Having enjoyed one of Peter von Bleichert's other books, "Blitz! Storming the Maginot Line", I thought I'd give this one a try. It is a little different to what I expected; unlike "Blitz!", this is a straight history book and not a narrative. Nonetheless, I found it very enjoyable.
The book is about one of the author's German ancestors, Adolf Hermann Bleichert, who designed an aerial wire ropeway for bulk conveyance of industrial goods. His design led to the formation of a specialised firm called Bleichert & Otto, Civil Engineers, which soon became Adolf Bleichert & Co. The firm expanded to dominate its sector of the market, during an exciting period of economic growth in Germany, and Bleichert Systems were soon introduced all over the United States as well.
After the introductory history, Bleichert provides very detailed and well-researched descriptions of important, large-scale engineering problems that were solved by his ancestor's aerial ropeways, across the world from Argentina to Tanzania. Throughout the book, he furnishes technical diagrams and lovely historical photographs to illustrate the engineering designs, and the industrial feats in which they were involved.
